Veranda students quickly discover that in addition to challenging academics, numerous programs exist at Lamar Consolidated High School that give them an edge on college applications as well as an early advantage in the workplace.
The high school employs a full-time College and Career Facilitator on campus to support students in reaching their post-high school goals.
The ability to take classes for college credit in high school cannot be understated. Students can get a jump on general education requirements in a partnership with Lone Star College Cy-Fair for dual credit.
Those interested in pursuing careers in engineering benefit from the high school’s participation in Project Lead the Way. The non-profit provides access to real-world, applied learning experiences that empower students to gain the skills they need to thrive.
Students interested in earning industry-related certifications can take advantage of the Career and Technical Education program. The options are open to all Lamar CISD students, but the district’s aquaponics lab and automotive center are both housed at LCHS.
The automotive center allows students seeking a career in the automotive industry to practice advanced diagnosis and repair in the areas of brakes, steering and suspension, electrical, and engine performance. The classes are taught by a National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence-certified instructor. Selected students are able to participate in on-the-job training allowing them to work with a mentor in an automotive dealership.
Aquaponics is a technology that uses fish and their natural waste to nourish plants in a controlled and sustainable way. The center boasts two 24-by-48-foot greenhouses, both fully equipped to run four commercial-grade aquaponics systems. The facility is used for biology, chemistry, business, marketing, accounting and culinary arts classes.
With so many options, it’s no wonder LCHS students received more than $2 million in scholarships last year.
